This tumble (and one other) likely cost Sasha Cohen the gold medal. She ultimately winds up with the silver medal, placing behind Japan's Shizuka Arakawa. Russia's Irina Slutskaya, fractions of a point behind Cohen before the long program finished in third.

Commentary from NBCOlympics.com producer Abigail Lorge and the 2002 Olympic co-champion pairs team of Jamie Sale and David Pelletier:
Sasha Cohen takes the ice to chants of U-S-A while still waiting for Gedevanishvili's scores.Bummer...She looks scared, Sale notes. She's talking to Nicks by the boards, nodding her head. Now heads to center ice. Taking a long time to arrive at her starting position. She's skating to "Romeo and Juliet" by Rota. She's opening with triple Lutz-double toe-double loop. And a fall on the Lutz. She's done. Then a triple flip -- stumbles badly again. Then a triple loop. This is heartbreaking for her; this was her chance. Then two spins; gorgeous. She's still performing nicely, notes Sale. Then triple flip-double toe. Nice combination. Then triple toe-triple Salchow sequence. Both clean. A sit spin. Then a double Axel. She holds onto the landing, and then goes into her circular footwork as the music picks up. Now into her signature spiral sequence. She hits her final jump -- a triple Salchow -- and goes into her final spin.
Sale: I don't even know how to start. Her warmup scared me. She didn't look like the Sasha we saw the other night. Either a potential injury or the nervousness didn't help her, and therefore she made too many costly mistakes, possibly even to stay on the podium. She is my favorite skater and I am extremely sad for her right now.
Pelletier: Unfortunately her destiny is in the hands of the other skaters now. I have to say, though, besides the two major mistakes, I am quite impressed with the way she regrouped. Very unusual to see somebody miss the first two elements and do the rest of the program picture perfect. I feel really sad because you want everybody to skate their best to see who really is the best.
Sale: She's so cute and I just want to hug her, says Sale.
She is in first place for now. See live results.

Update: Cohen is guaranteed a silver or bronze medal, sitting in second with one stater to go. Not the performance she hoped for. Also the streak of three straight gold medals in the event for the US is over.

Sasha Cohen is such a beautiful skater and to see her fall at the beginning of her program was heart-stopping. So glad to see her gather herself together and finish the rest of her program with such style and finesse. Hopefully she'll come back, stronger than ever, to win at the next Games. She is the class of the field.

Sasha Cohen probably one of the best skaters the skating world has seen in a long time. Skill, artistry, content, style make up only a portion of this fantastic young lady. So she didn't win the gold, so she fell twice but evaluate the rest of her content and certainly evaluate the way the content was executed. The skater who skated to her music with a masterful program. Did not use music as background. A minmal amoubtof the ladies in this comoetition could haveskatedto any music since they didn't bother to listen to what they were skating too. I say HATS OFF Sasha stand proud you are awesome.
