I wasn't going to go negative with my first post, but because the Olympics aren't cool except for bobsled, snowboarding, and hockey. And of course, the American curlying team is hot. But something needs to be said...
Michelle Kwan... sigh (and not the good kind). Gonna make some people mad, but when has that ever stopped me?
Ok, first off, figure skating isn't a sport. Sure, they are athletes, much more athletic than I ever was, am, or will be, but it's not a sport. If personal bias from someone who's not even competing or performing is the determining factor in who wins and who doesn't, then it's not a sport. That's called a pageant.
And as far as Kwan herself, she shouldn't have even been there. Does no one remember that she didn't even go through the qualifying? That she had to be voted onto the team? She got to Italy as a sentimental story for NBC to report on, and someone else got screwed out of spot because of it. But for some reason, every media member and Olympic fan is going orgasmic on Michelle Kwan. PUH-lease!!!
Next, the only person who has gotten more attention than Kwan is Bode Miller. Women are drooling, Matt Lauer is drooling, Jake Gyllenhaal is drooling. Miller is in a sport that is highly competitive, yet he comes out on the Today Show and admits that he doesn't care if he wins!!!! And I'm supposed to cheer for this a$$?!?!? No way!! If you have the chance to win medals and glory for your country, not to mention a chance to bang several hot European chicks while telling their European boyfriends to well you know..., you are telling me you aren't going to take that chance??? He basically said that he doesn't care, just likes to ski. Hey Bode, I have an idea, sit your fat a$$ at home and let someone who gives a crap compete for our country!!
Heck with the Olympics... give me NASCAR.

Actually, I think snowboard... (Below threshold)1. Posted by OregonMuse | February 15, 2006 9:55 AM | Score: 0 (0 votes cast)
Actually, I think snowboarding isn't a "real" sport in the same way that figureskating isn't a "real" sport. Real sports measure performance objectively, and this usally means either clearly-defined points, or the clock. If you don't have that, if it all boils down to the opinions of a panel of judges, it ain't a real sport.
If style points are awarded and/or "degree of difficulty" is a factor, it's not a real sport.

Oh, I totally agree with you, snowboarding isn't a sport either. I had this argument with my girlfriend last night, and she said that sports should be broken up into competitive sports (like football, baseball, racing, tennis, etc.) and judged sports (figure skating, gymnastics, etc.). I agree with her.

A sport: strenuous (spelling) physical activity with an objective measure of success. (Time, distance, goals/points scored, etc.) Anything with a judge isn't a sport. Anything without strenuous physical activity isn't a sport (NASCAR, horse racing, (sports for the car/horse, not the driver/rider) spelling bees, chess). But, the disclaimer, there are plenty of non-sports that require athletic skill I will never have.

Boarder-X is a real sport resulting in 1st, 2nd and a 3rd - period. No judges, no timing and few rules. If only the winner got to cook and eat the loosers it would be the ultimate winter sport.
I agree about the freestyle sports as well - snowboard halfpipe needs to go back to the x-games.
Yes, two of the U.S. curling girls are hot ...

And then there's the bitterness between the American speedskaters. Here's a video clip about it: http://www.clipblast.com/blog/clips-to-watch-olympic-rivalry-cbs-sports.htm
