Off Season Talking Points: Early Coaching Moves

No, I’m not talking about USC’s offensive coordinator, Norm Chow, heading to the Tennessee Titans to take over for departed Mike Heimerdinger as the team’s new OC. I’m skeptical about his chances of success, but only a little bit.

There are more interesting moves in the ranks of NFL coaching.

Jacksonville Jaguars

For instance, the Jacksonville Jaguars have hired USC’s QB coach, Carl Smith, to be their new OC. How the hell does a college level QB coach get picked up as an NFL OC? It’s an idiotic move, especially when Jim Fassel is still out there.

The Jags had the 21st ranked overall offense for the ‘04 season and fall to 29th if you look at scoring offense. They don’t need some NCAA schmoe who hasn’t even put together his own system yet.

I’ve never been a believer in Jack DelRio as a HC. This doesn’t lift my estimation of his competence.
