Week 12 Picks

Titans vs Texans

This game is tough to call, and not just because I’m loaded up on turkey right now and ready for a nap. The Texans have a slight edge offensively, but the Titans are without RB Chris Brown (who I am a huge fan of), which could give Houston a big edge.

But the Titans are significantly better on defense.

In this very close match up I have to believe that Titans QB Steve McNair will be the difference maker, as he has been so many times before.

What really concerns me is that the Texans just can’t seem to pull things together as a team, and are especially weak offensively so far this season. They’ve scored 13, 14 and 13 pts respectively the past three weeks and have gotten above the 21 pt mark just three times all year.

Steelers vs Redskins

Oooooooooo, the #1 defense (Bumblebees) playing the team with the #2 defense (Redskins)!

Or not. Because if you get away from the pure yardage allowed (which is how the NFL ranks teams), you see that the Redskins are noticeably less efficient than they first appear, but the Steelers are pretty close.

Washington’s offense is ranked near the bottom no matter how you examine it.

The Pittsburgh Bumblebees lack flash but have been surprisingly effective vs their overall production.

Falcons vs Saints

Can you believe that, overall, the Saints have a better offense than the Falcons (14th vs 20th)?

Those six spots of superiority translate into exactly a three point advantage.

Defensively, though, the Falcons have allowed 94 fewer points with the two teams playing similar schedules.

Advantage? Michael Vick’s legs. Because without them the Falcons would be scoring about 3 pts per game and their defensive success wouldn’t amount to a flaming sack of doodoo.

ESPN weenie Mark Schlereth recently commented that the Falcons are smart to use Vick so heavily in the running game, because he adds an extra and unpredictable dimension to their offense.

What Mark failed to include in his analysis is the fact that, without Vick running so often, the Falcons would have one of the least productive offenses in the NFL. Mark also ignored Vick’s shortcomings as a pocket passer – or even as a passer, considering that while he’s only thrown 7 INTs, he’s also thrown just 9 TDs. How many games is that gonna win ya?
