Over at Outside the Beltway James discusses the possibility that Steve Spurrier is headed to South Carolina, as reported by the Nashville Tennessean and Jeff over at Backcountry Conservative.
My reaction was the same as James': I didn't even know they had an opening! Lou Holtz has done and is doing as well as anyone has the right to expect in Columbia. I didn't get the feeling that Holtz was going anywhere and my hope is that he isn't being forced out.
If the story is true it will make South Carolina the grand champion of attracting coaches who could do better elsewhere.
Nothing against the Gamecocks. The fact is, they are behind Florida, Georgia and Tennessee for recognition in their half of the toughest football conference in the nation.
Spurrier should be able to start turning things around by attracting more talent, but it's still going to take a long time to get to the point where SC gets so much as a whiff of the SEC Championship game.
I'm curious where Spurrier's head is at after his stint with the pros. If he can be patient through a few seasons with more than two losses, there's hope. But I'm skeptical. He just doesn't strike me as the patient workhorse that the Gamecocks will need to move to the next level.
