Or is that Blue and Oranges? Whateva.
– I’m not the only one feeling a little antsy this week. Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was feeling a little fidgety, too. How did he perk up his week?
He fired Defensive Secondary coach David Gibbs, son of O line coaching legend Alex Gibbs.
To me, David always seemed to lack his father’s fire, and intentionally so. After seeing an interview with him this past off season I was left with the impression that he resented being in his father’s shadow and was not in agreement with his father coaching philosophy and style.
But Mike Shanahan and Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak are both more similar in temperament and style to David than to Alex. If the two of them are dissatisfied with Gibbs ability to motivate, maybe it’s time the turn to the mirror and begin a little personal reevaluation.
Denver’s defensive secondary has often played phenomenally well. They’ve also looked foolish at times, too often against very bad offensive teams.
Former Broncos player Jimmy Spencer and unknown Kirk Doll take over from David.
Is it really smart to let two newby defensive coaches take the reigns of a unit that, overall, has played solid football? In the middle of the season?
Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Personally, I’m a little nervous.
