Reader Steve Rondarte read Broncos Traing Camp: Day 17 and responded to my opinion that Denver RB Mike Anderson will eventually be cut.
Here is what I said:
”-- RB Quentin Griffin will get the nod at starter, Garrison Hearst will back him up and Mike Anderson will get the nod at #3 . . . at least until Tatum Bell is fully healed and playing confidently.
-- When Bell is healed, Anderson will end up the odd man out. He’ll have the option of moving back to FB part time and playing special teams, or being cut.”
Steve replied:
”You lost me when you said that Mike Anderson could possibly be cut. Worst case scenario he would be traded or moved to fullback but no way would he get cut.”
In fact, as I highlighted above, I did say that a move back to FB would be an option. But Anderson would not be the full time guy if that happens.
Aside from that, whether traded or cut, he'd still be out. If he is asked to go back to FB, then expect that he will ask to be cut or traded, and expect that Shanny will allow him to go so he can have a shot at his dream before his career is over – he’s now 30 and will soon turn 31.
GM Ted Sundquist told Lou From Littleton that Denver is only keeping 3 or maybe 4 RBs.
There’s just more talent than available roster positions.
When there are so many talented backs on the team, is he good enough?
If he’ll move back to FB, then Hape gets cut. If not, he still has a chance to stay, because while Hearst is marginally more impressive to this point, Anderson is a little younger. It’s not cut and dry.
But, why would a team make a trade with the Broncos when simply waiting a week or two will see the a good player cut loose for free.
Regardless of how it plays out, some team somewhere will be very happy to grab hold of Denver’s trash.
