Preseason Game 2: vs Bills

– It’s already scarey to see Jake Plummer’s bad decisions and accompanying interceptions piling up. He’s easily Denver’s worst QB to this point. He may be disappointed with himself, and he should be, but he doesn’t seem to being do much about it.

Jake excelled at throwing on the run last season. He was at his best when rolling out or when flushed from the pocket. The opposite seems to be true so far this preseason.

Has Plummer caught a case of the Bristers? Does he think that his excellent performance last year means that he can coast through the preseason while hoping to just pick up the intensity once the regular season comes around? If so he needs to remember that Brister got benched and replaced.

– Carrying on with some slightly less bad bad news, LT Matt Lepsis continued to struggle, though not so mightily as he did in the game vs Washington.

To be fair, Buffalo played him pretty smart early on. They knew he was struggling, so they overloaded him, throwing two rushers at him simultaneously. That helped lead to Plummer’s second INT of the night.

– If all of that wasn’t bad enough, TD’s performance from the booth looked a little stiff. He definitely needs to work on his presence in front of the camera.

– RB Quentin Griffin again displayed amazing quickness and agility. He made opposing tacklers look foolish at times. Sadly, he also continued to show that he does not run well in traffic. He may weigh in at nearly 200 lbs, but once a defender gets an arm on him chances are that he’s going down.

– Rookie WR Darius Watts may have only caught two balls and dropped two more, but he looked impressive doing it. He does not hear footsteps coming after him and makes grabs fearlessly at any point on the field.

More importantly, when he does drop a ball he takes it personally. You can tell that every small failure is a serious matter to him. He cares about what he’s doing and has a passion for it. If he doesn’t take the #2 WR spot away from Ashely Lelie before the regular season I’ll be very surprised.

– Kick off and punt coverages looked soft and weak. There was a lot of speed and good pursuit, but also returners running free for too damn many yards. I found myself breaking out in cold sweats while having some very ugly and frightening Frank Bush flashbacks.

– Every unit of Denver’s defense seems to have speed. They swarm to the ball like a hive of yellow jackets freshly run over by my lawnmower.

– Rookie RB DJ Williams has speed and power to spare. He also got caught over-pursuing at least once. But, my God, how Defensive Coordinator Larry Coyer must drool when he thinks of Williams in blitz packages.

– I know that of Buffalo’s top two running backs, it’s Travis Henry who gets all the press. But if he has another game this underwhelming (6 carries for 6 yds) and Willis McGahee keeps tearing things up like he did last night (13/58 1 TD) things will be changing very quickly.

Henry looked anything but prepared and capable. McGahee looked like the steal of the ‘03 draft. He showed fantastic straight ahead speed, good vision and surprising strength. He isn’t especially quick, but overall he was very impressive.

– WR Andrian Madise looked blazing fast when he had a chance to run back a kick. If he gets a bigger look at WR he’s got some nice moves. Once the ball gets into his hands he could be stellar with yards after the catch.

– As the game wore on, it seemed that Denver’s tight ends got used more heavily in the passing game. TEs Chamberlin, Weaver and Putzier all showed that they deserve consideration for the starting job. Putzier has game speed that is just sick in a man his size. I actually felt sorry for the guys who had to throw their bodies in front of him when he was carrying the ball.

– Buffalo QB Drew Bledsoe didn’t perform much better than Denver’s Jake Plummer. But Bledsoe looked very confident and seemed to be having fun playing again. That was something we didn’t see much from him last year when Kevin Gilbride was his offensive coordinator.

– RB Garrison Hearst was a pleasant surprise. He’s better in traffic than Q, has good speed inside and outside, he runs very tough and is patient. He lacks Q’s vision and quickness, but overall seems superior to Mike Anderson in every aspect except for pure strength.

– Overall, Denver QB Danny Kanell played a pretty good game (8/16 101 yds, 0 INTS, 0TD) . But he made one mistake that almost took Darius Watts out of the game.

Kanell rolled to his right on a bootleg late in the game. From the beginning of the play to the end he kept his eyes on Watts. He zipped the ball to Watts and two defenders about took Watts head off. Watts, not surprisingly, did not catch that ball.

– The guys playing just to make the team on offense played a more solid game than did the guys who lined up as offensive starters.

– Statistically Denver greatly outperformed the Bills during to first half. Sadly, they couldn’t translate yardage into points. If that was the only major problem there’d be little to worry about. But with Plummer making so many bad decisions and Lepsis still finding his way at LT, things are seeming shaky at best for the 1st team offense.

– DT Nick Eason drew some double teams, and when he was lined up next to DE Reggie Hayward the two of them easily pushed the pocket back.

– Every unit of the defense was amazing. They were disciplined, fast and relentless.

– Denver’s backup defensive secondary played a tighter, more disciplined, more effective game this time around, allowing only one pass play longer than 20 yds (compared to three vs Washington).

– Buffalo’s rookie QB JP Losman played tough, threw the ball accurately and had a quick release. He clearly outplayed Drew Bledsoe.

– Ending on a high note, after committing 9 penalties (13 penalties for the team) vs Washington just a week ago, Denver's first team drew only 2 flags (9 for the team) last night.

you sound pretty down on plummer. as i recall he struggled in the preseason last year. I think he will come around. do really think he forgot how to play?? rich gannon anyone

I've been a Broncos fan since 1978, so please don't think I'm simply bad mouthing the team. That isn't the case. I'm just not a homer.

I AM seriously concerned that Plummer isn't with it mentally this year. I was surprised and happy to see him perform so well in '03, but I'm not yet convinced that he can be a top NFL QB. I just can't get all those years in AZ out of my head.

I'll be very pleased should all my early preseason worries come to nothing.

I really don't think you should worry about Plummer. Remember, the play-calling in preseason games is as vanilla as can be. Shanahan and Kubiak will set a defense up and fool 'em, and Jake Plummer is the perfect QB for that sort of deceptive, trapping, misdirection offense.
If Griffin is that good in space, do you think Denver might install more of a perimeter running game like KC's rather than the power/cutback they have used over the last few years? I'm not sure you really have a good cutback runner this year, unless maybe it's Mike Anderson...
