2004 Broncos Training Camp Surprises
Day 1.
WR Darius Watts. He’s beating every DB Denver has and if anything can be taken from the tone and reporting choices of camp news, is out performing Ashley Lelie.
RB Tatum Bell still not signed.
Day 2
Aside from RB Tatum Bell still holding out, trying to squeeze every last penny out of the Broncos, it didn’t seem that much of note went on. Rookie LB D.J. Williams caught the eyes of watchers with his athleticism, but didn’t seem to be dominating the LB competition.
Day 3
Sounds like the Defense is the dominant unit, even with rookies manning key positions. But Q and Denver’s rookie WRs keep doing a better job than many might expect.
P Hayden Epstein is embarrassing P Micah Knorr if you look only at distance. But can he perform under pressure and get the ball off fast enough to prevent it being blocked? Nick Harris was a better pure distance punter than Tom Rouen a few years ago, but Rouen won the job because of his superior ability to get the ball off quicker and consistently in game situations. It’ll be interesting to see how this develops during the preseason.
Day 4
Tatum Bell finally shows up and by the end of his first practice he’s broken a finger. Kind of changes the expected order of things (at least from the perspective of most fans).
So, Bell will likely be out a minimum of three weeks, and probably more like six. Who will step forward and impress the coaches at the RB position? So far it sounds like Q and Anderson are the front runners.
