Day 5
– On Denver’s first preseason depth chart Mike Anderson is no longer listed as a FB. He’s the second string RB.
Is this a courtesy to Anderson, or is it setting him up as trade bait to Miami?
– Unknown DB Roc Alexander is listed as the second string CB, behind Kelly Herndon. At least until CB Lenny Walls is back from arthoscopic surgery.
– In the team’s first goal line drill of the day, the first team offense failed to score against the second team defense, with Q running the ball.
I think that says something about the depth Denver has on the defensive side of the ball.
– But the first team D lost two goal line battles to the second team O. Does that also say something about the quality of Denver’s second string offense? Or does it confirm that DE Reggie Hayward weakens the line vs the run, even as he upgrades it against the pass? Or did today just work out for the offense and it’s no big deal?
– RB Tatum Bell will likely be practicing again within five days. That’s crazy. Just keep slabbing a ball up against the man’s broken finger. Yeah, that’ll help him heal more quickly.
– Rookie LB DJ Williams seems to be a pass coverage monster . . . as LBs go.
– Actually, so far it sounds like the D in generally finds QBs and passes like a bunch of heat seeking missiles.
– P Hayden Epstein is definitely pushing P / K Micah Knorr. The difference between the two men’s distance today was minimal, though Epstein still won out. I still believe this battle will come down to who gets the ball away most effectively in game situations. I’m betting it’ll be decided by the third preseason game.

Hopefully it doesn't say anything about The Broncos offense. It is the first week of camp and they have had two rain shortened days, so we'll know more in the coming weeks.

I'm not sure how important any of this is, yet. Some news out of camp is pretty exciting. Some seems cause to mix a little caution in with my normal enthusiasm.
Overall, however, I don't put much weight on the news coming out of any camp. Camp hype is often overblown, but so are "problem" areas mentioned by reporters who often need to add a bit of sensationalism to their reporting.
These blurbs I'm putting up are just the things that come into my head as I read over the reports we're getting so far.
