Broncos Training Camp: Day 10

Day 10

– An easy day with the starters not seeing many reps, but the WRs are still putting up impressive individual performances. On the other hand, there was a reported drop in concentration overall among these youngsters, with an unusually large number of passes hitting the ground.

Ok, sure, pregame jitters are too blame. But, if they can’t even get the job done consistently with the pressure of an upcoming game, what will the pressure of the real deal do to them? I’m eager to watch the preseason game against the Redskins to find out.

– We finally hear a little bit about the RB situation and it looks like Q is the most consistently impressive of the bunch. As a fan, though, hearing that Ahmad Gallaway is lighting things up is the real shocker.

Ahmad had a poor season in NFL-E. He didn’t really deserve the starter’s job and put up some really disappointing numbers.

So now I wonder, did he know that NFL-E was a free ride, so he saved himself for camp? If he can burn it up against Denver’s D, then I can’t believe that he was giving his all in Europe. Maybe a smart career move for him, but a lousy way to treat his team and teammates overseas.

– It also sounds like, overall, the O is starting to pull ahead of the D. Why? Is the O really improving that much as the playbook is introduced in full? Is the D becoming complacent after a string of early successes that almost seemed too easy?

By the reaction of defensive coordinator Larry Coyer, which is positive and excited, I’ll have to guess it has nothing to do with a defensive drop off. That’s a huge relief, because now my concerns over the O can begin to be soothed. Maybe we can even realistically start to get excited about what the O will be capable of this season. Maybe.

– The most exciting news of the day was WR Rod Smith beating CB Champ Bailey both times they went head to head. It shows how smart and dedicated Rod really is, because Champ has thrashed him to this point in camp.

– LBs and CBs, overall, are so consistently good, that I have to be impressed, even knowing that camp news if often hyped. It isn’t just the assumed starters, but the back ups, and even the third string guys.

This is fantastic news. My biggest concern about these units was not the ability of the 1s, but depth. Looks like that won’t be a problem.

– Again I notice that the entire D seems to excel against the pass. This increases my excitement about the D, and my concerns about the O.
