Bills Break Camp, Make Cuts

The Bills broke their Pittsford, NY-based training camp after today's morning practice. All practices will now be closed to the public and held at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

In addition, the Bills released six players this morning. The only name likely to be familiar to Bills fans is that of Clarence Coleman, aka "The Cooler", as he was known to my brother-in-law and me. Coleman made the practice squad in 2002 and was active for all 16 games last year.

In other news, first-round pick J.P Losman had surgery on his broken leg today, and is expected to miss the first half of the season. As much as the Bills are trying to soft-sell the fact that Troy Vincent broke their number one picks leg while he was wearing the red jersey, eyewitness accounts say the hit was much more violent than the Bills make it sound. Meanwhile, the Bills have an interesting decision to make regarding the quarterback position. It appears they will keep Losman on the active roster, which makes it likely they will carry two other QB's on the roster and put Greg Zolman on the practice squad.

Some other miscellaneous notes: Second-year Pro Lawrence Smith continues to hold down the starting left guard spot after taking it away from Mike Pucillo...Terrence McGee has all but wrapped up the starting kick-return job...If the regular season started today the Bills receivers would be Eric Moulds, Lee Evans, Josh Reed, Bobby Shaw, and Sam Aiken...Pierson Prioleau, who started the first four games of last season at fre safety, is in danger of not making the team...Free agent rookie Rashad Baker has moved ahead of him as the back-up free safety...Lawyer Milloy and Coy Wire remain 1-2 at strong safety...Willis McGahee will get his first NFL start Saturday at Indianapolis...
