NHL: Niche Hockey Lovers

It is too bad but I guess it is true. Hockey is a niche sport. Amazing but I thought the fact that I finally became a fan would change everything. Ok, I'm back ... Drifted off for a second. But seriously, how many Avalanche fans do you think are really following the NHL Western Conference Finals? How many New Jersey fans? You get my point. Do you? [Full Post]

When the Red Wings were eliminated in round two, I was seriously bummed. They are my team. But just because they were eliminated, I haven't stopped watching the playoffs. True hockey fans, like the players themselves, live for the game. Disappointments over elimination aside, the playoffs are the playoffs. And there is no better exhibition of the talents that these athletes possess than what takes place on the ice in the playoffs. You won’t see it in the All Star game. The playoffs are a battle in which the weapons are desire and perseverance. The best hockey is playoff hockey and this hockey fan will be watching.

Any sports fan should appreciate what these guys bring to the rink night in and night out. Hockey is a great sport played by some of the best athletes in the world. Having said that, I believe they deserve better than what they get from the NHL. If you have followed my rant at all (otherwise known as my blog ThePostGame.Com), you'll know that I was one of those on the fence fans until my wife got me hooked on hockey. Now that I truly appreciate the sport, I really want it to persist and flourish on a bigger scale. Hardcore hockey fans don't care and believe that hockey should be left alone. They have no concern for the "casual fan", but that is naive. In every sport, the casual fan dollar is as important as the hardcore fan. Hockey as a business needs to improve and grow in order for the sport to survive.

I went a bit off of your topic (great comments by the way). What you said about the key elements of playoff hockey and what makes the post season so great is absolutely true. More people need to take notice of that.
