The New York Times reports:
Maurice Clarett, the former Ohio State running back, asked the Supreme Court yesterday to lift an appeals court ruling that bars him from the N.F.L. draft this weekend. The original trial court order permitting Clarett to participate in the NFL draft is available via Findlaw here. The case falls under the jurisdiction of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who may ask the National Football League to file a response before deciding the case. Both sides expect her to either ask for the response today or deny Clarett's request.
On Monday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Manhattan stayed a decision by Judge Shira Scheindlin of United States District Court that would have let Clarett enter the draft. That decision, issued in February, struck down the N.F.L.'s restriction that prohibits players from entering the draft until three years after they graduate from high school. Scheindlin found that it was an illegal restraint of trade. Clarett did not play last season because of an infraction of N.C.A.A. rules, but he led Ohio State to the national championship as a freshman the season before.
