I don't really get the DJ Williams pick, not completely. He isn't a guy who can come in and start. He's a guy to add depth.
Ok, yeah, with injuries to Mobley and Gold (with Gold probably leaving Denver), Denver needs to add LB depth. Last year’s depth was incredible and there was little drop off after Mobley and Gold went down. But that isn’t the case now that last years backups have become, out of need, this year’s starters.
But crap, Denver didn't have to move up 7 spots to get DJ Williams. I can understand filling a need, that isn’t a problem. But there were far better players available who also happened to fill other needs.
I won't go so far as to call this a stupid pick, but it damn sure isn't the best possible one.
Kevin Jones should have been the obvious pick, because he perfectly matches the prototype of what Denver goes after and has success with. I wouldn't have cried over Steven Jackson, I just don't think he was the ideal fit that Jones would have been.
There were other players who could have made greater immediate impact than Williams – Smith, Udeze, Willfork – but I’ll leave the mystery of those lost opportunities for others to ponder in print.
Because I want to move onto what I consider the other half of an “interesting” first two rounds.
I am VERY happy to see Denver pick up Tatum Bell, as I expected them to. I don’t really care about his running style and his fumbling problem. I may care by midseason, but right now I’m at peace.
Tatum Bell is an excellent choice because he is also a fabulous match for the prototype that Denver so loves. He’s strong, fast, and aggressive. Bell doesn't have any problems that Shanny has not worked out of other backs – starting with Rod Berstein and ending with Clinton Portis. That isn't to say I'm not nervous about Bell putting the ball on the ground, but it's more likely that he'll learn to be a better ball carrier. If he’s coachable, he’ll be the next great Broncos back. If not, I’ll be crying a lot next year.
And finally, a possible reason for what seems to be two rounds of fuzzy thinking.
Money.
It costs more to sign a top RB than a top LB. Shanny always keeps one eye on the salary cap, and Denver obviously believed that they could pick up what they wanted in rd 2.
They probably saved themselves several million dollars in cap space over the next 4 - 6 years, and still got players that should, at very least, fill some holes and add some depth.

That's a moronic statement. He's a very talented player and is amazingly agile. The problem is his size. He's too easily taken down by the first tackler. His saving grace is that he has a Sanders like ability to make tacklers look foolish. I know he's built powerfully thick, I just don't see how a man who is only 5'7" can take the every down pounding required to be a featured back.
He clearly has shortcomings, but he doesn't in any way "suck". Or were you having some kind of sexual fantasy?
