Panthers and Golden Eagles in Same NIT Bracket

Since last week when both UW-Milwaukee and Marquette lost their way into the NIT local college hoops fans have been clamoring for a Panthers-Golden Eagles showdown. That won't happen in the first round [Here's NIT director, Jack Powers' explanation (audio).], but if Marquette wins its game tonight and if UW-M wins two games they will face each other.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Dale Hofmann criticises Marquette for avoiding their closest Division 1 neighbor. But Marquette's correct that it doesn't have anything to gain by playing the Panthers. If they won it would just be another victory over a little-known (outside Wisconsin) team, but if they lost it would be an embarassing loss to a little-known team. A victory would only intensify Panthers fans' efforts to get a annual game scheduled. All the benefits would go to UW-Milwaukee. Marquette doesn't need to lift their prestige level. Heck, they'll be in the soon-to-be uber conference, the Big East, in a few years.
