Gilbert Brown Gone

After 11 seasons in Green Bay, defensive tackle Gilbert Brown is no longer a Packer. His age, his history of injuries, and the signing of Grady Jackson last season dug the "Gravedigger's" grave.

While I've always liked Gilbert Brown, I've never been especially impressed by him. This is especially true after seeing him in action during the GB / Denver SB.

So much of the hype leading up to that game was about how massive Gilbert Brown was going to destroy the Broncos tiny O line. Yet, except for two plays, it just didn't happen. He was a non-factor.

Those two plays were his opening play of the game and his opening play of the second half. On those two plays he in fact did blow through Denver's O-line. However, his great and impressive effort on those two plays took so much out of him (I believe due to his obesity) that he never recovered enough to make a difference in the remainder of either half.

He's a good guy and a pretty good player, but he was never as good as his hype.

Well, no, not really. In that particular game Gilbert mostly took himself out. His was sucking wind the entire game (with the exception of the two plays I mentioned above) and just didn't have enough gas in his tank to be effective. I'm not saying he was never cut blocked, but that wasn't primarily what kept him from being a force in SB 32.
