Chargers Keep Flutie, Dump Wiley

This article details the San Diego Chargers' moves prior to March 3rd deadline... my thoughts:

First, re-signing Flutie to a three year deal really puts some questions into my mind...there are some decent free agent QB's out there, with Kitna even commenting on how he would like to join the Chargers. Regardless if the direction of the Chargers is going to stick with Brees or not, I think re-signing Flutie was not a smart move.

Tim Dwight, a guy that always gave 110% on every play...but luck has never been with him... he is often injured, sometimes because of his playing style and has on a couple of occassions dropped an easy catch that would have greatly benefitted the Chargers during a game...but he is not alone in that regard. I always liked Tim but I feel that re-signing him rather than seeking another alternative was again, not a smart move for the Chargers.

The sheddding of Marcellus Wiley and Stephen Alexander were just no-brainers. Wiley, 3 years removed from a franchise record contract for a defensive player, had only garnered 9 sacks in the past two seasons, with only 3 this past season. Alexander, singing a 5 year deal in 2002, has caught only 1 TD for the Chargers during his two-year stint, with no receptions at all last season.

I like the re-signing of Jason Ball and Eric Parker. Ball, a young capable center and Parker, fast as lightning and developing wide receiver.

I question the re-signing of linebackers Zeke Moreno and Carlos Polk. Although both received considerable playing time, both never appeared too impressive - although the entire defensive squad rarely looked impressive - I think free agency and the draft would have more potential then the quick re-signing of these two.

The Chargers still have yet to 'tip their hand' as to what they will do with the number 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. Towards the end of the season, GM A.J. Smith seemed to be leaning towards using the number one pick, but not for a quarterback. Since then, it has been anyone's guess. I suggest they trade the pick and address the areas that are most needed at this time, offensive and defensive linemen. But truth be told, as long as Schottenheimer is the coach my expectations for this team are not high.
