Bills Sign Troy Vincent

He may be no Antoine Winfield, but the Buffalo Bills have added Troy Vincent to their roster. Vincent comes at a most reasonable price, signing a six-year deal worth $20 million dollars. Most importantly, his signing bonus is rumored to be in the $3.5 million range, making him very cap friendly when it's time to cut him.

The Bills project him as a starting corner this year playing opposite Nate Clements, which will allow first year player and last years pleasant surprise Terrence McGee time to get more experience at nickel-back. I would imagine that when McGee is ready to play corner, Vincent would shift over to safety and end his career there.

In other Bills news, free agent quarterback Billy Volek visited the Bills yesterday. The Bills are looking for a young quarterback who can replace Drew Bledsoe, perhaps as soon as next season (or this season, if Bledsoe plays as bad as last year). If Volek has what the Bills are looking for, he could save the Bills some headache in the draft. Volek will come cheaper than any QB the Bills might take with the #13 pick, likely to be David Rivers, who may be a reach at that spot. If the Bills wait until the second or third round to address the quarterback spot, they may end up with a player who won't be ready next year.

Volek is also being heavily pursued by Atlanta and Green Bay. I'm not sure why he would be considering Atlanta if he wants to be a starter soon. I mean, backing up Michael Vick is not likely to get you alot of playing time. And if Vick goes down the Falcons, well, the Falcons will suck. Green Bay or Buffalo just seem to make more sense to go back up Bledsoe or Favre for one year, then jump in as the starter.

The Miami Dolphins signed Bills back-up running back and special teams captain Sammy Morris to a two year deal. Miami fans may be unfamiliar with someone like Morris because he is a class act, and will be missed here in Buffalo.

The Bills also picked up their option on center Trey Teague, making him a Bill for another two years at almost $3 million per season. I think Teagues versatlity (he can play every line position), his smarts, and the signing of free agent center Chris Bober by the Kansas City Chiefs, all contributed to the decision to extend Teague.

Coming soon: a look back on the 2001 draft.
