Bills Quick Hits

There has been plenty of activity out at One Bills Drive of late, but nothing that is going to shape the fate of the Bills next year. Nevertheless, an update is in order.

- The Bills opened mini-camp today, allowing rookie head coach Mike Mularkey to get his first up-close view of the troops.

- On hand for mini-camp was defensive end Keith McKenzie, who re-signed with the Bills this morning. I thought he wasted away on the bench last year and could be a factor as a pass-rush specialist next year. We shall see.

- Free agent QB Billy Volek re-signed with the Tennessee Titans the other day, keeping the Bills on the hunt for Drew Bledoe's backup. Volek got offered more money by Atlanta, playing opportunities in 2005 by the Bills, but he opted for Tennessee citing familiy and community. Sounds like when Frank Reich was here...he had a home and thought he was lucky to be playing football in his home city. Can't say as I can fault him.

- On the subject of the Bills backup, I expect the Bills to sign Kordell Stewart when all is said and done. He was in town today, and had all the right things to say. Yeah, yeah. He knows Mularkeys system, he can help Bledsoe, he would be a change of pace, blah, blah, blah. I don't suppose anyone has considered that he is a very bad quarterback? Like so bad the Bears let him go? OK, just checking.

- Also visiting recently was Falcons QB Doug Johnson, Falcons TE Brian Kozlowski, Rams TE Roland Williams, and Panthers CB Terry Cousins. Cousins might be a nice pick-up for depth if the price is right. Does anyone have grave concerns about the back-up tight end position? No? Then let's move on.

- Ruben Brown visited the Bears the other day, saying he's "intrigued" about playing for Lovie Smith. Considering Ruben's phone isn't exactly ringing off the hook, I would think he would be more than intrigued. Chicago may get their revenge for the Bills signing Chicago guard Chris Villarial yet though. Imagine if we sign Kordell Stewart?

- The Bills have approached the agent for DE Aaron Schobel regarding a contract extension. Jonas Jennings is also up next year, and I would imagine the Bills are thinking along the same lines with an extension for him as well.

- Well how about that? Eric Moulds was the honorary chairman for the NCAA tournament here in Buffalo. Hopefully he imparted his life's wisdom on these young, impressionable minds. I heard Dan Diener is going to immediately go home and beat up his girlfriend, while the entire Texas Tech frontcourt plans to never pay child support payments. I'm sure it's just a coincidence...

- I couldn't remember if I blogged this earlier, but Alex Van Pelt is the new Bills color analyst, joining John Murphy in the radio booth. Nice article in the above link.
