Who Did Better?

The Yankees traded for last year's MVP Alex Rodriguez to form the "Dynamic Duo" (to use Derek Jeter's words) in the Big Apple. Who's Batman and who's Robin? On Rodriguez vs. Soriano, David Pinto writes,

I think A-Rod is just a better long term player than Soriano. To take a phrase from Moneyball, it's not the result, it's the process. A-Rod approaches hitting correctly. Soriano doesn't. And it's getting a little too late for Soriano to learn.

The Cubs brought Greg Maddux back to Chicago. With him added to the powerful one-two punch of Kerry Wook and Mark Prior, they now have the best starting five in baseball (including Carlos Zambrano and Matt Clement).

If I were somewhere near a Vegas sports book I'd put money on the Cubs rather than the Yankees. The Yankees haven't plugged the holes in their pitching rotation. They lost both Andy Pettit and Roger Clemens, but signed Kevin Brown. The big gamble with him is if he'll stay healthy. The Cubs not only have a monster rotation (my poor Brewers are going to be clobbered by them this year), they picked up LaTroy Hawkins and Kent Mercker for their bullpen. With the Maddux signing I'll go so far as to make the Cubs the early favorite to go to the World Series. The Yankees should make the playoffs, but that's about all.
