NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Oakland Raiders named Norv Turner as their head coach Monday.
The former Washington Redskins coach spent the last two seasons as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins under Dave Wannstedt.
The 51-year-old Turner replaces Bill Callahan, who was fired following a 4-12 campaign one year after leading the Raiders to the Super Bowl. Oakland was whipped by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48-21 in the title game.
"I belong here," Turner told a news conference. "I feel like I'm home now."
Raiders owner Al Davis said Turner's dedication to the game and "pride, poise and class" were the biggest factors in his hiring.
"I just thought he was the right fit," Davis said.
Turner, who signed a multi-year deal with the Raiders, was head coach of the Redskins for seven seasons, compiling a 49-59-1 record.
He was fired 13 games into the 2000 campaign.
Turner, who has 19 years of pro coaching experience, becomes the 14th head coach in Oakland's history.

I like Norv Turner, but being likable doesn't make him a good coach. If he's proven anything at all, it's that he does not belong in a headcoach position. He's an ok Xs and Os guy, but not very good at preperation and lousy at motivation.
Not that I'm complaining. I'm perfectly happy to see the Raiders already positioned for failure next year . . .and the next year after that, and . . .
