Payton Spurns Raiders, To Stay With 'Boys

Dallas Cowboys Official Website: Payton Decides To Stay

Payton had all but accepted the Oakland Raiders head coaching job on Tuesday, but the 40-year-old assistant reversed his field on Wednesday, deciding to remain with the Cowboys for at least a second season, and likely more since he received a contract extension and pay raise. Terms of the new deal were not disclosed.

"I'm really excited about moving forward with the Dallas Cowboys and continuing the job we started a year ago," said Payton, who just completed his first season with the Cowboys, having been hired by head coach Bill Parcells as his assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. "In regards to Oakland, I was certainly flattered and fortunate to interview with them and wish them the best."

Quite bizarre.

Amusingly, Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer turned down an offer from Nebraska to be their head coach.

Update: Mickey Spagnola has a pretty good explanation for Payton's move.
