Although the announcement that Schottenheimer was to return did little to improve the outlook for most Charger fans, some good news is coming out of San Diego. Defensive Coordinator Dale Lindsey was fired today. Lindsey spent 2 seasons with the Chargers and turned what was once a somewhat respected defense into one of the league's worse.
Early buzz is that Ted Cottrell, just let go by the Jets, is a potential replacement, and has ties with both Schottenheimer and Charger GM A.J. Smith.
I will feel a lot better if Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron and Special Teams Coach Steve Crosby were both given their walking papers as well.
SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - The changes on Marty Scottenheimer's coaching staff began Saturday as the San Diego Chargers announced that defensive coordinator Dale Lindsey and secondary coach Jerry Holmes would not have their contracts renewed.
In one season with Lindsey as defensive coordinator, the Chargers allowed 27.6 points per game to rank 31st in the NFL.
Holmes was in his second season as secondary coach.
Last month, general manager A.J. Smith announced that Scottenheimer would return as coach next season, despite his woeful 11-21 record in two seasons. Changes on his staff were expected.
San Diego shared the league's worst record at 4-12 and owns the top pick in April's draft.
