According to some reports the Chargers have been contacted by 2 teams about the potential for a trade for Drew Brees. The Chargers hold the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and a tough decision to make. Do they stick with Brees as the future QB for the Chargers or trade Brees and use the number 1 overall to draft a QB.
My thoughts... I still think Brees could be a quality NFL quarterback but probably not under Marty Schottenheimer and the poor offensive line the Chargers currently field in front of him. This past season Brees seemed to regress in development - his deep ball was well off the mark EVERY time. It was only after his return from being benched that Brees began to show signs of improvement and it was primarily because he only trusted Tomlinson and tried to force the ball to LT whenever possible...which paid off for the entire team (there is no question that Tomlinson is the Chargers offense) in noticeable better offensive production.
What I think the Chargers could/should do - trade that No. 1 away and move down to the spot where the best offensive lineman would be available and begin to give Brees the protection and time that will in turn help him regain confidence. It would also give Tomlinson some blocking which currently he has none...imagine if Tomlinson got a block how awesome he would be!?!? Pending the fruits of that trade, build up both lines as best as possible and I think that would be a good first step to rebuilding this team. But with Marty still head coach of this team I have very little faith in any move actually paying off in the short term for his old-fashioned style of football is easily defended and easily beaten...but at the very least, I do not want to see another Ryan Leaf situation happen.
