Week 14 Freaks of the Week

They announced the Grammy nominations this week, but in fantasy football world we let the world know who's best by handing out Freaks of the Week. Let's get rockin'.

The Quarterback Freak goes to a guy who racked up points using both his arm and his feet. No, I'm not talking about Michael Vick who made some Barry Sanders-like moves in his 141 yard rushing performance against Carolina. I'm talking about San Francisco's Jeff Garcia. He threw for 252 yards and four touchdowns. Superb, but he didn't stop there. In the 49ers' thrashing of Arizona, Garcia also rushed for two scores as well as 32 yards. Six touchdowns came directly from him.

In the Running Back Freak catagory there were a bunch of great performances, one freaky performance, and one Freak performance. Five players rushed for over 150 yards. Baltimore's Jamal Lewis is included by rushing for 180 yards with three touchdowns against the Bengals (who aren't deserving any more love by falling out of first place in the AFC North). Also put Buffalo's Travis Henry on that list by rushing for a career high 169 yards and one touchdown against the Jets. The Chargers' LaDainian Tomlinson ended up with a weird line by having more receiving than rushing yardage (148 to 88). Two of his catches wound up being touchdowns. However, this week's Freak has to go to Clinton Portis for his monster game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The guy is still young, but he may have already had his career game. Portis rushed for 218 yards and five touchdowns. He had a 9.9 yards/rush average. He also caught two passes for 36 yards. Portis averaged over 10.5 yards of offense everytime he touched the football! No, this isn't a video game stat. He did this outside the Matrix.

When a quarterback throws for four touchdowns like Jeff Garcia did, fantasy owners hope one of his teammates also had a big game. Terrel "Pom Poms" Owens did do well by catching seven passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie sensation, Anquan Boldin also had a fine game of his own by catching nine passes for 123 yards, one touchdown but one fumble in Arizona's lost. Kansas City's Dante Hall showed people he's more than just a return threat by catching 11 passes for 124 yards and rushing for 15 yards. Heck, Marcus Robinson caught another touchdown pass disproving my suggestion that he was a flash-in-the-pan. Those performances were good, but they just didn't top the Freak show Randy Moss displayed against the Seattle Seahawks. Moss caught eight passed for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Looking at the both scoring plays it was a simple as Dante Culpepper telling Moss to run down the field as fast as he could. Culpepper simply chucked it to him like it was a backyard game.

Deciding the Defensive Freak was tough this week. You know how much I love defenses scoring, and there were a few who did that this week. There were also some shutouts and some outstanding individual defensive performances. Green Bay, Minnesota, and New England all ran interceptions into the end zone. New England and Jacksonville shut out their opponents. Tampa Bay's Simeon Rice and Jacksonville's Tony Brackens both had three sacks. Lots of big-time defensive play down the stretch. This week's Freak is going the Patriots. Their line is great: 0 points allowed, five sacks, two interceptions, one defensive touchdown, and one safety. Sure, it was snowing so the Fighting Fish were at a serious disadvantage. But Miami quarterback Jay Fiedler says he never saw Tony Bruschi when he threw an interception right at him. That's not just good defense, that's Freaky defense.

It was another ho-hum week for the tight ends. The Chiefs' Tony Gonzalez caught six balls for 73 yards. Denver's Shannon Sharpe also caught six passes for 73 yards. San Francisco's Jed Weaver (who?) caught four passes for 76 yards. The Freak goes to New Orleans' Boo Williams for catching four passes for 56 yards and one touchdown. This is getting almost as boring as picking Kicking Freaks. Somebody tell the Chiefs to look for Gonzalez in the end zone. And what happened to the Ravens' Todd Heap?

In the (as usual) boring contest for Kicking Freak, a Packer other than Ahman Green had a shot. Against the Chicago Bears, Ryan Longwell booted four field goals and two extra points for a total of 14 points. Alas, Green remains the only Packer Freak. That's because the Colts' Mike Vanderjagt kicked five field goals and two extra points for 17 total points.

Garcia, Portis, Moss, the New England defense, Williams, and Vanderjagt, you are the most outstanding fantasy players this week. This week, the Grammy's may have went totally hip-hop, but you guys just rocked. Be proud of this honor. For you are Freaks of the Week!
