Week 13 Freaks of the Week

In Week 13 we had fantasy studs prove why owners drafted them so high. Lots of points were scored, and with tight races most teams have an incentive to keep playing their best players. This should make for a very exciting final stretch of the season.

The running back race was great to watch. All Five Horsemen (Clinton Portis, Marshall Falk, Priest Holmes, Ricky Williams, and LaDainian Tomlinson) rushed for over 100 yards. Four of the Five Horsemen (Portis, Falk, Holmes, and Tomlinson) found the end zone. Three of the five (Portis, Falk, and Holmes) found the end zone more than once. This makes it tough to choose a Freak. But that's why they (don't) pay me the big bucks. Marshall Faulk gets the Freak by rushing for 108 yards and three touchdowns and catching two passes for 35 yards.

A fantasy stud also is the recepient of this week's Tight End Freak. Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez only caught four passes for 28 yards, but two of them were touchdowns. In a quiet week at that postion, Gonzalez gets his second Freak.

In the race for QB Freak, one player almost won with his feet, and I'm not talking about Michael Vick. New Orleans' Aaron Brooks rushed for two touchdowns against Washington. Too bad he only threw for 121 yards and one touchdown, or he would have been a two-time Freak.

I'm tempted to give Matt Hasselbeck his third Freak. Against Cleveland he threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns but had one interception (only his second in four games). I could also give a Freak to Jon Kitna because the Cincinnati Bengals still deserve lots of love for remaining in first place in the AFC North. Kitna threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions. But I'm not giving a Freak to either of them. That's because Indianapolis' Payton Manning threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns and one interception in the Colts' loss to New England. Hasselbeck and Kitna, better luck next time.

On to awarding the Wide Receiver Freak. After the games last Thursday it would be very hard to take a Freak away from Miami's Chris Chambers. In the Dolphins' pummeling of the Cowboys he caught five passes for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Some men took on the challenge. Randy Moss caught 10 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown, and Seattle's Darrell Jackson caught eight catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Neither performance was enough to nip Chambers' fins.

Oh did Baltimore give San Francisco a whupping. Their defense played like the one that won them a Super Bowl a few years ago. They only allowed the 49ers to score six points, picked off four passes, and ran one in for a touchdown. Oddly, the Ravens didn't sack the quarterback one single time. Freaky things happen, and the Baltimore Ravens Defense justly gets a Freak.

Like the Wide Receiver Freak, those playing on Sunday and Monday had to match a great Thanksgiving Day performance. Against the Green Bay Packers, the Lions' Jason Hanson booted five field goals and one extra point for 16 total points. It made for tough time swallowing my turkey, but it gave Hanson his first Freak.

Faulk, Gonzalez, Manning, Chambers, the Baltimore Ravens Defense, and Jason Hansen, you weren't turkeys this Thanksgiving Weekend. Instead, you provided plenty of entertainment and (more importantly) fantasy points. While doing your Christmas shopping and stimulating the economy brag a little about how you did. For you are Freaks of the Week!

P.S. Don't forget your favorite fantasy football columnist when doing your Christmas shopping.
