USC Beaten by Equation

The BCS rankings are out and the number one team in the nation will be shut out of the National Championship game. Even though USC is number one in both the coaches' and AP polls, Oklahoma and LSU are are one and two respectively.

While there are many reasons to complain about how the BCS determines the national title participants, I want to briefly examine one point. Other than winning all their games, USC did everything they could to get themselves into the big game. What denied them the chance was the performance of other teams on their schedule. USC had no control over that. It's not that USC loaded their non-conference schedule with Division I-AA pansies. The Trojans played teams like Auburn and Notre Dame. Through no fault of their own they have been denied a chance at the national title.

Unfortunately for that theo... (Below threshold)

Unfortunately for that theory, the BCS doesn't rank SOS based on past reputation -- they based it on current performance. And if Notre Dame had beaten Syracuse, USC would have been in.
