The BCS Blew It

Well, the BCS did get one thing right this year: they brought back the classic matchup of Big 10-Pac 10 in the Rose Bowl - likely for all the marbles, in one poll at least. But overall, this has got to be the worst showing from the BCS system yet.

We have a rematch game in the Orange Bowl, a Championship game in the Sugar Bowl which won't crown an undisputed champion unless USC loses, a game in the Fiesta Bowl which inspires thought about what else might be on that night, and one great throw back classic that should be a blast to watch.

The Orange Bowl has to have the worst of all possible worlds this year. You have a rematch of Miami and Florida State, Big East and ACC champions respectively, neither of whom deserve a BCS slot except for the fact that they won their conferences. I'm a Miami fan. I had been hoping that the Orange Bowl would find a way to get someone different or exciting in as an opponent for Miami, maybe a Texas or a Georgia. One thing I've learned from the rematch games (and Miami has had several over the last couple of decades) is that they are nowhere near as exciting as the regular season game between the two teams.

The Fiesta Bowl didn't do much better, in my opinion. Yes Kansas State earned their way in, and they're an interesting team right now - especially after their demolition of Oklahoma. But, again, they needed someone more exciting to play against than OSU. Georgia-K State would have been a fun one to watch (not Texas though, be too much like the Orange Bowl game). I just know that I'm not getting real excited about watching Ohio State. I don't believe that the previous year's champion should get an automatic bid into the BCS and this year, there were teams that I thought were clearly better and more exciting teams than Ohio State.

LSU-OU in the Sugar should be a fun game to watch. The Sugar got a great matchup, just probably not the one that they should have for the "National Championship" game. USC-LSU would have been a better choice. OU's loss to K-State in the conference championship game should have taken them out of the national championship picture. How can they be considered the best in the country if they aren't even the best in their conference? It simply doesn't compute (except in the computers). Not to take anything away from OU, they are certainly a BCS caliber team this year, just not a Sugar coated one.

USC-Michigan is going to be the great game of the four big bowls this year. If USC wins, they will prove conclusively that the BCS can't deliver what it is supposed to and that the "National Championship" is still as mythical as it was in the pre-BCS days. The Rose Bowl will be the one game I most certainly watch this bowl season, the other three are maybes, as they all seem to lack that something special this year.

Even the Orange Bowl with my Hurricanes. I do have to give the boys from Coral Gables credit though, on January 1, the seniors will complete the BCS Slam, having played in the Sugar Bowl in 2000, the Rose Bowl in 2001, the Fiesta Bowl last year, and the Orange Bowl this year. 4 years, all 4 BCS bowl games. That's a pretty impressive feat and one of the few positives to come out of Miami this year.

What I do not understand is... (Below threshold)

What I do not understand is why there is not an OSU-Miami rematch in the Fiesta and FSU-KSU in the Orange?
