Pettitte to Astros Confirmed

Andy Pettitte has decided to move home, joining the Astros for a three year, $39 million deal that will be announced today at a news conference.

For the Astros: I never thought they were serious about Pettitte, and don't think they (Houston) even thought Andy would be an Astro. But sometimes when two sides want something enough, things get done. Now with a front-end of Pettitte, Miller, and Oswald the 'Stros have a tough top three.

For the Yankees: This loss is the epitome of the scattershot approach the team has taken this offseason. Simply put, I think you had Cashman and Torre with their legal pad entitled "Things to Do This Offseason", which neatly listed 10-15 moves they thought they should make. Number one or two was probably "resign Pettitte". Then Steinbrenner got involved, the Yankee brains had to make all kinds of marks and changes on their list, and somehow they forgot the "resign Andy" part. Too many people pulling in different directions ensures chaos. Now they will hopefully overpay for Kevin Brown, because a starting five of Mussina, Vazquez, Contreras, Lieber, and Weaver doesn't strike much fear into anyone, and we all know the Yankees like to win with pitching.
