Joe Horn picks up a $30,000 fine for his ill-timed cell phone call last Sunday. $30,000? I thought the NFL was going to punish the guy. The NY Giants shouldn't take Horn's act personally. This was blind stupidity. Any apparent targets were purely coincidental.

As for Horn's explanation that he was just trying to entertain the fans, Bah Humbug! And the SI writer's "The No Fun League is at it again trying to take all the fun out of the game," comment ... Humbug I tell you! This was not fun. It was not entertainment. It really wasn't much of anything until you tried to tell me that you did it for me, a fan. Now I'm insulted. If you need to do that to get attention, knock yourself out. Just don't call me stupid in the process.

Hearing Horn reminded me of Sosa's lame, "I accidentally grabbed the bat that I use to entertain fans during batting practice," explanation for his corking incident. Is this going to become the athlete's spin for every dumb thing they do? "I was just trying to entertain the fans and got tripped up." If so, where will it end?

"I was trying to smuggle pot wrapped in tin foil through the metal detector at the airport to give my fans a little excitement."

"In trying to run over that policewoman I was striking a symbolic blow against the stifling opression of authority on behalf of all my fans."

As a fan, let me be the first to say, "No thank you." Really guys. Spare yourselves the fines and bother, because I don't find premeditated theatrics entertaining.

I am a sports fan. Not a sports entertainment fan, just a sports fan. I like watching athletic competition. I like seeing guys who love to play their game and who are good at it. I love to see guys playing hard, within the rules, for the entire game. I've got no problem with spontaneous displays of excitement. When a guy is totally into what he is doing and makes a great play, I'd expect that. On that front I totally agree that the NFL has gone too far.

On these pre-planned stunts however, for the love of the game, please do something substantial. Fine 'em hard. Suspend them. Do something that hurts, because the last thing I want to see is a bunch of wide receivers around the league trying to one-up each other. It's a game. Give the ref the ball so we can move on. If I want to watch someone make a cell call, I'll go ... pretty much anywhere these days.
