Palmetto State native Robbie Caldwell, who was announced as the new South Carolina offensive line coach on December 24, changed his mind over Christmas and informed South Carolina Head Coach Lou Holtz Saturday that he would be remaining at Vanderbilt.
South Carolina's coaching changes have mounted up since the end of their season in November.
Coaches Chris Cosh (Def. Coord.), Todd Fitch (QBs), Dave DeGuglielmo (OL and John Gutekunst (DBs) were all fired the Monday after a 63-17 loss to in-state rival Clemson. WR coach Charlie Williams left to join the staff of Mike Stoops at Arizona.
East Carolina's offensive coordinator Rick Stockstill, who coached at Clemson for 14 years, was hired to coach receivers. Since his hiring, some news reports in South Carolina have put his name on the list of potential new head coaches at the Citadel. The Citadel job opened when Ellis Johnson took the defensive coordinator's position at Mississippi State after also being approached about that position on Lou Holtz's staff.
David Reaves has been elevated to coaching the secondary after serving as a graduate assistant for two years. Ron Cooper, most recently the defensive coordinator at Mississipi State, was hired to coach defensive backs.
The Gamecocks were looking to hire Mark Snyder as defensive coordinator, but the hiring of Mark Dantonio by Cincinnati has put that on hold given Snyder's chances of moving up at Ohio State now. Fired Bearcats coach Rick Minter has also reportedly been discussing the defensive coordinator's job at South Carolina.
Holtz has also indicated that he will be taking over the offense next year but said he couldn't answer any questions about how that would impact his son Skip's position as offensive coordinator. South Carolina will be hiring their third defensive coordinator over the span of three years.
Three positions remain vacant on the USC staff with Signing Day slightly over a month away.
