With the Bills 17-6 win against the Jets on Sunday the team seem to have a buzz around them this week. The convoluted, and nearly impossible, combination of events that would allow them to make the playoffs has been the talk around town, but not around the Bills.
For their part, the players appear to be keeping it in perspective and saying the right things. You know, we'll just go out and play hard...nothing's over yet...we can only control what we can control... It's the right attitude and it seems sincere.
That aside, the Bills face a daunting schedule of Tennessee on the road, Miami at home, then New England on the road. Even if the Bills win all three, the combination of losses needed by Tennessee, Denver, Miami, Baltimore and others means that despite local radio talk, the Bills will be watching the playoffs on TV.
Some Bills notes for the week:
The defense rose to number two in the NFL rankings in both yards against and points against. This despite being near-last in turnovers forced. I think this shows the time needed to get a defense of talented players to play as a unit. Back in early October I noted that I wasn't particularly concerned with the "D" because they had good talent and good coaching. Anyone think Jerry Gray would stay if Gregg Williams goes? They came over together from Tennessee.
Steve McNair has a cracked bone spur in his left ankle. He is listed as questionable and will be held out of practice all week. Local radio blabberers tell us this bodes well for the Bills. Really? Is that the same Steve McNair who missed every practice over the last five weeks last year and still played in every game, and won them all too? McNair stting out? I'll believe it when I see it.
Marques Sullivan, who has been inactive since losing his starting guard spot to Mike Pucillo, started at tackle for the injured Jonas Jennings. I expected we would see Marcus Price, the usual backup, but Sullivan got the start and played quite well. That situation speaks nicely for the Bills depth at tackle.
Mike Pucillo, Keith McKenzie, and Sammy Morris were all inactive last week. All three practiced yeasterday. Pucillo practiced at center while Trey Teague got the day off. Travis Henry and Eric Moulds were held out as well.
For the second week in a row, the Bills followed their so-called "blueprint" that everyone expected from them all year. Tough defense, play for field position, let Henry pound the defense behind Sam Gash, and limit Bledsoe's exposure to the pass rush by hitting quick passes. Every time the Bills have approached a game in this fashion, they have won. When they abandon the run or get fancy, trouble ensues. The results of the last two weeks leave me more frustrated as to what might have been rather than happy with what is happening now, or in the future. What if Gilbride had just called the games this way all year? What if Williams had stepped in sooner and overode his offensive coordinator? A wasted season to be sure. And now they are playing well enough to screw themselves out of a good draft pick.
