Drew Bledsoe threw for 252 yards and two touchdown passes in leading the Bills to a 24-7 pasting of the New York Giants in a battle of disappointing teams. Bledsoe took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Keith Hamilton in the third quarter, stayed in to lead the Bills to a game clinching touchdown drive, and then gave way to backup Alex Van Pelt.
The defense continued to be worthy of it’s preseason hype as they held the G-Men to 222 yards and seven points, 77 yards of which came on their only score of the game, a pass to Amani Toomer. In their last four games, the Bills are 1-3, but don’t blame the defense. They have held their last four opponents to 10,12,17 (Indy), and 7 points and improved to second in the league in yards against. And they have accomplished all that without any legitimate pass rush.
Aaron Schobel had his first three-sack game going against rookie Jeff Roehl, who was in for the injured Luke Petitgout. In fact, the Giants line may be more banged up than the Bills, who finished the game with only two starters (Trey Teague and Mike Williams).
As an aside, I thought Mike Williams handled himself pretty well while going against Pro-Bowl defensive end Mike Strahan. I thought I would throw that in since local talk radio host Bob Gaughan was pounding Williams this morning. Gaughan, who happens to be the least intelligent sports radio personality I have ever heard, spent the better part of the morning wondering if Williams would even be the starting right tackle for the Bills if Tom Donahoe had the guts to admit he was “wrong” for picking him. Hmm, as much as I would love to delve in to the Buffalo sports talk radio market I can see the readers eyes glazing over, so I will move on.
Injuries could have played a big part in the game for the Bills, yet never did. The offensive line was a patchwork, with Ross Tucker starting for Mike Pucillo at guard, and Ruben Brown and Jonas Jennings both leaving the game with injuries. In addition TE Dave Moore, starting for Mike Campbell, caught his first TD pass of the year, then left with a concussion sustained on the play. Keith McKenzie (quad strain) and Terrence McGee (ankle) also went out and did not return. Sammy Morris was inactive (bruised knee) and Sam Aiken has been placed on IR (torn knee cartilage).
Incidentally, last week I hypothesized that Jim Fassel may be the next head coach of the Bills. After watching that Giants team roll over on Sunday I hope I am wrong. (Of course, I also predicted the Bills defense would quit this week, so that shows what I know).
Next week brings the Jets to town for a 4:15 match up (I’m not looking forward to that). The Bills will be looking to avenge their 30-3 blowout loss at the Meadowlands in October. I’m looking forward to seeing Pennington tonight. Any hints for New York cuisine for the tailgate would be appreciated.
