What is the purpose of the NCAA again?

Michael Wilbon has a column in the Washington Post discussing (lamenting?) the new college conference structure. But he also raises a good point -- what exactly do Myles Brand and the NCAA do, besides suspend players for stupid rules violations and pick which teams get to play in the NCAA tournament.

It is possible, indeed maybe even likely, that within 5 years the BCS schools will break away altogether from the NCAA, yet Brand doesn't even make a peep about the radical changes that are going on within his membership. Even if he can't do anything about these changes, don't you think that talking about it might have an effect, or at least demonstrate that you are concerned about it? It's called leadership Mr. Brand, and you sir have failed the leadership test. Even worse than failing to lead, you and the NCAA have become irrelevant.

So when the 63, or so, BCS schools break away and the NCAA becomes the home for the schools without big time football programs it can look back to this summer as the time when the dye was cast.

This wouldn't be so shockin... (Below threshold)

This wouldn't be so shocking if college sports were understood for what it really is: developmental leagues for the pros.
