Week 12 Freaks of the Week

This will be an abreviated Freaks of the Week. I'm saving up my strength for Turkey Day and post-Thanksgiving shopping.

The QB story in the real football world was Anthony Wright coming out of annonimity to throw for 319 yards and four touchdowns in the Baltimore Ravens' shootout win over the Seattle Seahawks. In fantasy football world, we care more about Wright's almost mirror-image, Matt Hasselbeck. He threw for 333 yards, five touchdowns, but also had one lost fumble. That gives him his second Freak of the year.

As an aside: unless someone tells me otherwise, the Hasselbeck brothers have the unofficial record for most touchdown passes thrown by brothers in one day in NFL history. Five from Matt plus one from Tim give the Hasselbecks six total. That will surely be broken in the next few years if Eli Manning becomes even half as good as brother Payton.

On to the running backs. Once again, Green Bay's Ahman Green doesn't get a Freak. It's now been three weeks since his last Freak. He might be losing his fantasy touch. But since the Pack keeps on winning (mostly because of his legs) he might not care--but he should!

What's more amazing is Kansas City's Priest Holmes has only one Freak, and that was way back in Week 3. This week, he did his best against the Chiefs' hated rivals from Oakland. Holmes rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown. He did even better catching the ball by snatching six passes for 100 yards. Unfortunately for Priest, that wasn't enough for a Freak.

To find our Running Back Freak we go to the New Orleans-Philadelphia game. The Saints may have lost, but Deuce McAllister had another monster game (see last week's Freak of the Week column). Against the Eagles, Deuce rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Along with that, he caught four passes for 48 yards. This week Deuce didn't do what he did last week, and that's fumble the ball. Put that all together and he gets his first Freak.

In the battle for Wide Receiver Freak, I have to give more love to the Cincinnati Bengals. They won again and remain in first place in the AFC North. In their win, Chad "I'm Joe Namath reincarnated" Johnson caught 10 catches for 107 yards and a whopping three touchdowns. Really, really good numbers, but not enough for a Freak. To find this week's winner we go back to the Shootout at M&T Bank Stadium. (Can the NFL have final say over corporate naming rights? M&T Bank Stadium has no ring to it.) When a team like Baltimore puts 44 points on the board someone should have a Freak-winning performance. I already mentioned Anthony Wright, so the next best guess is running back Jamal Lewis, but Deuce McAllister won that Freak. Who's left? If you guessed Marcus Robinson I'd tell you you were lying then say you were correct. 57% of his catches were for touchdowns--that's 4 out of 7 for those of you who learned math in a public school (Oh am I going to get e-mail for that one). Robinson's complete line was seven catches for 131 yards and four touchdowns. I'm alost tempted to give him the Itula Mili One-Hit-Wonder Freak Award. Robinson had a promising start with the Bears, but injuries and lousy play have made him a fantasy hobo. But he's also the type of player to explode like he did Sunday only to vanish into obscurity.

20 seconds. That's all it took for the Minnesota Vikings to reverse being on the ropes to the road win-less Detroit Lions. In that short timespan, the Vikings defense picked off two Joey Harrington passes and ran them both into the endzone. Minnesota also only gave up 14 points and had another interception. Freakdom loves defensive touchdowns so the Vikings defense gets them out of their four-game losing streak and earns them their second Freak.

At the tight end position, it was pretty much a slam dunk. Against Atlanta, Tennessee's Frank Wycheck caught five passes for only 39 yards, but two were touchdowns.

Another quick and easy Freak pick is Matt Stover of the Ravens. When your team is in a shootout, you have a good chance at getting a Freak. Stover kicked three field goals (longest: 42 yds) and five extra points for a total of 14 total points. That gives him three Freaks and he breaks the tie with St. Louis' Jeff Wilkins.

Hasselbeck, McAllister, Robinson, the Minnesota Defense, Frank Wycheck, and Matt Stover showed the world they were really hungry to excel. Men, you have one hell of a story to tell around the Thanksgiving table this year. You not only had great games, you can lay claim to being Freaks of the Week!

Have a good Turkey Day everyone. Go Pack, and someone tell Miami never to wear those sherbert jersey's again.
