Carmen Policy Next NFL Commish?

Cleveland Browns' President Carmen Policy sells stake in team to make a run at the NFL's top job in 2006.

Speculation is rising the big reason Policy sold his Browns stake to Lerner is because he's quietly clearing the deck to pursue the NFL commissioner's job in 2006, when current league boss Paul Tagliabue will likely step down.

Policy, a longtime San Francisco 49ers executive before linking up with late Browns owner Al Lerner in 1998, has plenty of friends in NFL circles. And, say sources, those NFL friends may prefer Policy for commissioner over someone like probable candidate Roger Goodell, a league vice-president who acts as Tagliabue's enforcer when the office has problems with various teams.

No offense Josh, because you may not know this, but citing a Roger Brown column as a credible source for a story is sort of like using Michael Jackson as a reference for a job at a Day Care Center.

Policy has responded incredulously to this item, denying it in the strongest of terms, and seems sincerely bewildered at how Brown could have come up with this stuff. At this point, I'll take the word of even the slick-talking Policy over the ramblings of Roger Brown.

Now that Carmen is stepping... (Below threshold)
