Bowden's Job Secure?

Duane Rankin of the Greenville News reports on a Florida Times-Union article that seems to shed some light on the coaching situation at Clemson.

The article in the Jacksonville newspaper discusses Tommy Bowden's job situation in light of Tuesday's weekly news conference and a statement later released by Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips.

Bob Thomas of the Times-Union reports that Clemson Assistant Athletic Director Tim Bourret told him that, "He [Phillips] was trying to say, 'Guys I'm planning on having him back next year, without saying it.'"

Bowden's brother Terry, who works for ABC and is the former Auburn head coach, is reported as telling Thomas that, "You wouldn't make those statements, particularly about graduation rates, if you were going to change directions."

Rankin's article includes the following line:

Asked about the Times-Union report Thursday, Bourret said, "The only comment that I made on the record for the Florida Times-Union were Terry Don Phillips' statements."

It would appear that Bourret was either the victim of miscommunication or got burned by the reporter. His refusal to discuss anything but his "on the record" comments with the Greenville News and the fact that he never denies making any comments off the record about Bowden's job being secure would seem to indicate that he really made that statement to Thomas.
