The Bills scored two (count ‘em!) touchdowns Sunday to snap a 218-minute scoring drought, but managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in falling 17-14 to Indianapolis. The Bills led for most of the game, but gave up two fourth quarter touchdowns, including an Indy TD on fourth and goal from the one with 1:36 remaining. It was the Bills fourth straight loss, and the third straight loss by less than five points.
In a shocking development, offensive play calling did not cost the Bills this game. In fact, for the third straight game Drew Bledsoe failed to make the needed big play in the face of a defense that blitzed frequently. Think about all the close games that could have turned if the offense was able to make just one big pass play. Philly, Miami, Dallas, Houston and Indy. All were very winnable games where the Bills failed to produce one significant pass against the blitz.
Final analysis of the Bills game Sunday: Great weather, OK offense, and good defense, beaten by a better and more confident team.
Injury update: a massive injury report will be revealed Wednesday. Eric Moulds played despite his groin pull and left the game frequently with “hamstring cramps”. The coaches say he is at “80%”; I’d put him more around 50%. Travis Henry played with a broken fibula and gutted out 98 total yards…he deserved a better fate. LT Jonas Jennings played with his hip flexor, and LG Ruben Brown has a hyper extended elbow. RGV Mike Pucillo was knocked out in the fourth quarter with turf toe, and LB Jeff Posey went out with a sprained knee. WR Sam Aiken missed the game with a torn meniscus in his right knee and will get it scoped tomorrow. He may be lost for the year. WR Clarence Coleman was out with a pulled hamstring. Safety Izell Reese missed the game with a concussion. Something tells me that list would be less serious if the Bills were winning.
Beautiful weather made the game much more enjoyable, with highs in the 70’s and plenty of sunshine. As I type this Monday night it is snowing and 30 degrees, marking our first snowfall at my house this year. Shorts and T-shirts were plentiful on Sunday, and we lingered longer than usual at the tailgate after the game. Still made it home by 7:00 though.
Next up for the Bills are the New York Giants, a team who appear to be a carbon copy of the Bills. My personal opinion is we will be watching the Bills next head coach Sunday in Jim Fassel. Just a hunch.
