Bills Freefall Continues

The Bills suffered yet another defeat at the hands of an inferior team on Sunday, losing 12-10 to the Houston Texans. The loss leaves the Bills record at 4-6, virtually guaranteeing that the Bills will miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year. The Bills out gained the Texans 335 yards to 245 yards, yet the offense continually self destructed, failing to find the end zone for the third consecutive game.

I have no desire to prattle on for the fourth straight week about the poor quality of the Bills coaching staff, but I do have some accumulated thoughts from the game.

Astute observer Mark Pietz, who has the good fortune of marrying well (like my sister), noticed on the second series that Mike Williams, the Bills massive right tackle, was MIA. We found out after the game that Williams flipped his pickup truck over on the way to the game and was made inactive. No charges were filed and Williams was examined at a local hospital and by the Bills doctors. He appears to have escaped without injury. That, however, is not a good way to start a game. Marcus Price started in his place, and Jonas Jennings returned to his left tackle spot after missing last week’s game with a hip injury.

The Bills also played without star wideout Eric Moulds, who has a nagging groin injury. To make matters worse, Travis Henry left the game in the second quarter, but returned for the start of the second half. He is listed as day-to-day with a fractured fibula. How the hell can you be day-to-day with a broken leg? It is a testament to his toughness, considering he is also playing with torn rib cartilage.

Bills injuries are no excuse, however. The Texans were missing four starters on a defense already ranked last in the NFL. In addition, the Bills knocked David Carr out of the game early on a Jeff Posey sack that went for a safety. Note: the Bills do not fare well when they open the scoring with a safety. The same thing happened in the KC game this year.

Some items that may illustrate the Bills inept offense: The Bills had the ball five times inside the Texans twenty. Result: two field goals. As mentioned earlier, the Bills have now gone three straight games without a touchdown, which is a Bills record. In other words, in the forty-four year history of Bills football Drew Bledsoe has achieved something that Matt Kofler, Joe Dufek, Vince Ferragamo, Bruce Matthison, Dan Manucci and Todd Collins were unable to achieve. Three consecutive weeks of the most inept offense in the history of the Bills.

Drew Bledsoe continues to work overtime in his attempt to have his offensive lineman kill him in his sleep. On at least three occasions he checked out of called third down running plays and went to the air, failing to make a first down each time. Buffalo was 1-6 passing on third and short for the game. As fun as it is to slam Gilbride, Bledsoe has to take some as well. Why someone wasn’t in Bledsoe’s face at some point is beyond me.

While the defense turned in it’s second straight tough performance, they had their share of problems as well. Nate Clements was brutal. He went for the strip on Andre Johnson’s TD catch and missed. He also missed the tackle on a screen pass to Johnson that went for 42 yards. Aaron Schobel? One tackle. Posey had the sack of Carr in the end zone, but I didn’t even see him the rest of the game. Adams and Williams shut down the run, and Antoine Winfield had his first interception in 30 games.

The barbeque pork sandwich at the tailgate was the only saving grace for the day. Well, that and Labatts Blue.

The closing note is a quote from Ruben Brown about the offensive coaches. “How many times can you hear ‘let’s go’, how many times can you hear ‘come on’, how many times can you say ‘give more, try harder?’” Normally, I would light up any professional athlete who said something so arrogant, but being here and watching this coaching staff waste the talent on this team leads me to land squarely on Ruben’s side of this one. This team, at least on offense, has completely lost faith in the coaching staff. The defense should follow this coming Sunday against Indy.

For a blow-by-blow illustration of Gregg Williams’ ineptitude, read the column by Buffalo News writer Jerry Sullivan here. Jerry, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
