There's controversy in this week's group of Freaks. Here's a hint: it pays to know the inner workings of your fantasy football league.
For unemotional fantasy football players like us we didn't care when Green Bay's Ahman Green fumbled the football. First quarter, overtime, who cares? Yeah right! Looking past that error (even if it was caused by a great hit) Green put together a wonderful game. He ran for 139 yards, caught six passes for 51 yards, and got into the end zone twice. I'm sure Green and the Pack would give up his third-straight Freak for a re-do on that play, but for fantasy players he's on a roll.
The defense Freak goes to St. Louis for shutting out Atlanta, getting three sacks, picking off two passes, snatching up two fumbles, scoring a touchdown, getting a safety, and blocking a kick [Whew!]. That was as tiring to write as the Falcons' felt after getting whupped by the Rams.
In fantasy world, kickers are a dime-a-dozen. Most weeks a bunch of them end up with similar numbers. You also don't know who will have an outstanding performance. A team with a bad offense like the Chicago Bears could kick four field goals and get routed 31-12 or an offensive machine like Indianapolis could move the ball at will, get loads of touchdowns to give their kicker lots of extra points. Kicking variance is illustrated in that the first five kicker Freaks have gone to five different players. This week, that trend continues. Baltimore's Matt Stover gets his first Freak by booting four field goals and two extra points for 14 points.
In the battle for tight end Freak we have a dilemma. Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez had an outstanding game with four catches for 121 yards. The Jets' Anthony Becht had only three catches for 41 yards. No question Gonzalez should be this week's Freak, right? Wait just a minute. Two of Becht's receptions were touchdowns while Tony only had one. Who cares, right? Gonzalez had so many more yards, he certainly deserves a Freak. If we were just awarding outstanding performances then yes, Gonzalez would get his first Freak. But this award is Fantasy Freak of the Week. Who would you rather have had? If you're in a performance league it depends on how much catches and receiving yardage is worth. For example in my league you get one point for a catch and one point for every 20 reception yards. This week, Becht ended up with 17 total points. Gonzalez had 16 points. It's almost a dead heat. However not everyone plays in performance scoring leagues so for them touchdowns are the most important number. Freak judges put lots of weight on touchdowns. Therefore, Anthony Becht gets this week's tight end Freak.
Now, who would I rather have in my lineup? It's a no-brainer, Gonzalez. The past two season, Becht had five touchdowns each year and only has 12 catches in six weeks. Gonzalez has scored six and seven times in his previous two seasons and caught 60-70 balls. We could be seeing Becht breaking out and becoming the weapons the Jets have hoped he would be, but I'd stick with the tried and true Chief.
In awarding the wide receiver Freak we almost had a similar situation. St. Louis' Torry Holt caught 11 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns. The Titans' Derrick Mason had six catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns. In this case Mason had more yards and touchdowns so he gets his first Freak.
In the QB department let's not leave the Titans. Against the Texans, Steve McNair reminded the NFL that his nickname is "Air." He threw for 421 yards and three touchdowns but had one fumble. You would think having a career game would get you your first Freak. Nope! Then there is Trent Green's performance against the Packers. He passed for 400 yards and three touchdowns. That's got to get you a Freak, right? Nope, again! To find our Freak we go to the Washington-Tampa Bay game where Brad Johnson passed for 268 yards and four touchdowns. Remember, fantasy owners love touchdowns. Lots of touchdowns usually equates with lots of yardage, but not vice versa. There are also times like in Week 4 where Payton Manning threw for 314 yards along with six touchdowns. That just makes for obscenely good fantasy numbers. This week, Johnson passes (pun intended) McNair and Green to get a Freak.
The lesson to take away from this week's Freaks is it all depends on your league's scoring system. Knowing how you get points will help you when looking at matchups or when you're arguing with yourself on who to start.
Green, the Rams' defense, Stover, Becht, Mason, and Johnson have been bestowed with fantasy football's highest honor. They are Freaks of the Week. They should cherish this award, brag to their teammates, and tell as many reports as possible. Some of these players may never win a Super Bowl, but they will always be a Freak.
