Pitiful Braves

How far the mighty have fallen. AJC reports,

On Tuesday afternoon Chicago Cubs fans were poised to celebrate the Cubs' first World Series berth in 58 years. Red Sox fans congregated at Fenway, anticipating a possible ALCS lead against the hated Yankees.

And Braves fans?

Twenty of them spent the lunch hour in an empty parking lot. In the shadows of Turner Field and another lost postseason, they gathered to celebrate a rare playoff highlight, new by Bambino and Billy Goat curse standards, but seeming more and more ancient day by October day.

Tuesday marked the 11th anniversary of Sid Bream's slide home, which sent the Braves to a second consecutive World Series and prompted five "Braves win!" proclamations from broadcaster Skip Caray. The Braves finally won the World Series in 1995, but since then failures have drowned out good memories.

"You've got to have something to cheer for because our guys sure didn't do it at the end," said Mary Lou Brooks, standing where home plate at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium used to be. "I'm beginning to feel like Cubs fans: Wait till next year."
