More on OSU's Reynolds

Jonathan Linder of Badger Nation has an in-depth story on Wisconsin reaction to Sorgi's injury at the hands of Reynolds, including more details of how it happened.

Ohio State Defensive End Will Smith defends his teammate Robert Reynolds in today's Columbus Dispatch.

Other columnists and writers for the Dispatch glossed the incident over by using words like appeared or seemed or mentioned that Wisconsin objected to it as a dirty play. No one for Ohio State seemed to accept any responsibility for what was obviously a dirty play.

The Toledo Blade made it sound like a normal injury situation by saying Sorgi was "hit in the neck" by Reynolds while one article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer mentions Sorgi left the game but doesn't mention Reynolds or how the injury took place. However, another article in the Plain Dealer did mention details.

Football is a ferocious game, at least that’s how defensive end Will Smith explained the controversial play in which linebacker Robert Reynolds appeared to place his hand on the throat of Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi following a tackle.

"Robert gave him a tough shot, but that’s the way football is," Smith said.

Sorgi left the field holding his throat and did not return.

"He was saying he couldn’t breathe," Smith said.

Tim May, also writing in the Dispatch, shows that his paper seems to be more interested in not losing subscribers than in telling the truth by using the word seemed:

Ohio State, playing stifling defense, appeared to have the Badgers under control, because Sorgi had been knocked out of the game with a throat injury when linebacker Robert Reynolds seemed to rough up the Badgers QB at the bottom of the pile.

Todd Jones of the Dispatch also glossed it over:

Nothing much was happening, just two teams pounding away in the rain, with one play by OSU’s defense knocking Badgers starting quarterback Jim Sorgi out of the game — a play his team later objected to as a dirty in nature.

Cleveland Plain Dealer

Meanwhile, the Badgers' starting quarterback, Jim Sorgi, was supposed to undergo meltdowns in inclement weather not seen since Dorothy threw the bucket of water on the witch. Instead, he threw darts in the damp, outplaying Krenzel until Ohio State, grown desperate, knocked Sorgi out of the game.

This came one play before a third-quarter Badgers field goal that made the lead 10-3. Sorgi went down under an avalanche of tacklers on a scramble, one of whom, linebacker Robert Reynolds, climbed to his feet by using the quarterback's wind-pipe as a hand-hold.

Sorgi played no more. "He was having trouble breathing. He couldn't talk. You saw the film," Alvarez said.

"For them to do that to our quarterback is one of the lowest things I've ever seen," said Evans, before Alvarez quickly muzzled him.
