Dennis Green? Mike Stoops? Dan Hawkins? Arizona Coaching carousel spins

Let's recap the recent developments, rumors and stories pertaining to the UA coaching vacancy.

Pulling out of the running has become lucrative for a few coaches. Fresno State Head Coach Pat Hill was able to work out a new football locker room in exchange for pulling his name out of the running. Within hours of being mentioned as a possible replacement in Arizona, Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach was already being offered a fat raise of 300k a year.

The Oklahoma City Television station News 9 had the scoop that UA had asked permission to speak with OU assistant Mike Stoops, a charge that was later refuted by the search committee.

Don't count out USC Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow as well, whose name has been repeatedly floated for positions in both Arizona and Duke.

And of course, there is still current interim head coach Mike Hankwitz, who's had the Wildcats playing better as of late.

Out of nowhere, comes the former Stanford, Northwestern and Minnesota Vikings coach to become the leading contender for the Univ. of Arizona head coaching job. This and more in the recap of recent weeks developments on the University of Arizona's head football coaching position.

The rumors have been bubbling for a good week now, that the search committee was going to narrow the list down three contenders Boise State Head Coach Dan Hawkins, Bengals Assitant Ricky Hunley, and a mystery pick. Looks like Green will indeed be that mystery pick. To which Greg Hansen says that would be a mistake.

More from Hansen's column

Green is slick. He is powerful. He, along with NFL head coaches Steve Mariucci, Bill Callahan and Marty Schottenheimer are represented by IMG, agency to sports stars. Green is so well-connected that Bill Walsh, his mentor, and Tyrone Willingham, whom Green mentored, would surely call Jim Livengood and exhort him to hire Dennis Green.

Any athletic director in the country would be tempted to hire Dennis Green as his football coach. His people can make a powerful case that he is the man who can undo the mess created by John Mackovic.

If it comes to that, if Dennis Green knocks on Livengood's door, the UA must consider one thing: How long will he seriously consider coaching at Arizona before moving on to better things?

The Wildcats don't need a Big Name. They need a Neighborhood Guy, a capable coach who will stick around for eight or 10 years, develop some enduring Wildcat blood and devote his professional life to filling the old stadium.

Don't fall for the prettiest face at the dance.

Steve Norris:

I'd bet ther ranch that Green get's the Raider's job. Green was sucking up to Al Davis, calling him a genius, on Monday Morning Quarterback on ESPN.

Patrick Minary:

With the firing of Frank Solich I don't know why anyone isn't reporting Dennis Green as Solich's replacement. He is a much better name than canidates mentioned who are likely no better than Solich
