Clemson bounced back with a win this week despite still being handicapped by injuries. Airese Currie played but Yusef Kelly was still out.
Clemson QB Charlie Whitehurst was 18 for 34 for 309 yards through the air. Receiving leaders for the Tigers included Derrick Hamilton (3-102), Currie (4-87), Duane Coleman (4-48), Kevin Youngblood (4-32) and Curtis Baham (1-21.)
Clemson rushed for 219 yards. Coleman led all rushers with 111 yards while Chad Jasmin rushed for 87 yards.
Clemson's scoring started with a 69-yard pass to Hamilton from Whitehurst in the first quarter. The Tigers went up 13-0 after a 1-yard run by Chad Jasmin and then a missed extra point.
The second quarter scoring included a 21-yard pass from Darian Durant to Bowman and a 3-yard run by Lewis to put the Tarheels up 14-13. Aaron Hunt kicked a 41-yard field goal as the half ended to put Clemson up 16-14.
UNC opened the scoring in the third quarter with 7-yard run by McGill (a native of Clover, S.C.) to put the Heels back in the lead 21-16. A 1-yard run by Charlie Whitehurst made it 23-21 in favor of Clemson. Durant scored on a 63-yard run to swing the Heels back into the lead 28-23. Derrick Hamilton returned the ensuing kickoff from his own endzone for 100 yards and a touchdown. Clemson led 30-28 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Aaron Hunt kicked field goals of 27 and 23 yards to give Clemson 36. North Carolina drove the ball down Clemson's throat on their last drive of the game, but Jamal Fudge knocked the ball loose as Durant was falling down at about the 1 yard line.
