WHY WUSA FAILED

WSJ makes an interesting observation:

Right now, minor league baseball, with virtually no TV exposure, is flourishing in more than 100 American cities and towns, even though many teams lose their biggest stars to major league teams as the season progresses. It seems hard to believe that American women's professional soccer couldn't sustain itself with the same level of grass-roots support as minor league baseball and cultivate its fan base from there.

You miss the point:

WUSA didn't WANT to be minor league baseball. There is already a minor league women's pro league (called "W League) and has been for years.

WUSA was set up as a major sport, paying major salaries and with a huge support system. They lost $50 million their first year, and then lost another $60 million their second. That money would operate the Appalachian League for decades.
