Superstar closer John Smoltz says he's going to be off the injured list in plenty of time fo the playoffs, but a trip to Birmigham has fans worried:
The Braves insist it's no red flag and maintain that Smoltz, sidelined since Aug. 24 with elbow tendinitis, could rejoin the team as soon as this weekend in Florida. But there has been speculation that his condition is worse than initially indicated, and his slower-than-expected recovery could threaten his postseason readiness.
James Andrews performed reconstructive elbow surgery on Smoltz in March 2000.
"He is undergoing rehabilitation with Dr. Andrews' therapist in Birmingham for a short period," Braves general manager John Schuerholz said. "I don't know how long that will be.... He should be back in plenty of time [to prepare for the postseason]."
A trip to Birmingham hasn't been a typical step in the recovery of others returning from tendinitis. But with Atlanta being so close, Schuerholz said it made sense.
