SHEFFIELD RELUCTANTLY TIES AARON RECORD

Gary Sheffield batted in three runs last night, giving him 127 on the season, tying Hank Aaron's Atlanta record set in 1966.

"That's a record I don't want," Sheffield said. "That's a guy [Aaron] I grew up idolizing. My grandfather taught me about him. I don't want his records. He deserves to keep all his records. I wish I could reverse it, to be honest with you. Unfortunately, I'm in a situation where I have to go out and play hard because these games mean something.

"It's just a personal thing."

Asked if it was because Aaron helped pave the way for black players, Sheffield said, "Most definitely. It's one thing to break barriers; it's another thing to break records. Jackie Robinson was a great player, but he wasn't the player Hank Aaron was. To play under those conditions and break records, too -- that's unbelievable."

With seven games left in the season, it's likely Sheffield will have the record to himself before it's over.
