I don't want to take too much away from the Giants, but Mike Martz proved why he has not won a championship as a head coach.
Kurt Warner made a lot of mental mistakes, and the report coming out of New York is that he suffered a concussion early in the game.
That may explain some of his fumbles, but it doesn't explain terrible play calling by Mike Martz.
3rd down on your own four, and the Rams run their wideouts 15+ yards up the field, with the tight end, running 10 on a slant. Kurt Warner had 3.5-4 seconds before he felt the pressure from a late blitz. He hangs onto the ball, ducks a tackle, runs back inside, and suffers a forced fumble and a sack that turns a safety into a touchdown.
The clock management of the Rams late in the 3rd quarter, down by 17, was pretty typical. The Timeout situation was as per usual - wasting them on offense for plays.
Tiki Barber fumbles the ball and the Rams recover on the 1 yard line when they're down by 10. No request for a replay.
Rams down by 17, Holt juggles a cball on the sideline on second down that obviously touches the ground, and the replay flag is thrown.
The Giants did what they needed to, but so did the Rams defense. The problem was the playcalling of the Rams offense, then a series of bad coaching decisions that never let the Rams get back into the game.
Including a 4th and 12 on the 30, and a 4th and 11 at the 25, both of which fail, when they could have gone for field goals and the onside-kick.
Not that it mattered. They had no heart left by the time the game was over.
I still don't buy the Giants being a great football team. They had good stunts and blitzes called against a one-armed center and a team that refused to rush Marshall Faulk. The Giants gave the Rams plenty of time to come back. They are too much like last years team, where mental mistakes cost them games throughout the season that put them in the Wild Card.
Good win for the Giants. Potentiallu devastating loss for the Rams. It could take the fire out of them.

You're down by 10 and it's 4th down. More than 5 minutes on the clock what do you do? Do you kick a FG to bring it back to within a TD and send your defence in to win you the ball back? Not if you're St Louis, you go for it on 4th, don't get the first down and thereby lose the game because you hand the ball over on downs and stay 10pts (2 possessions) back from winning the game.
Oh, did I mention I thought I saw the NYJets offensive co-ordinator having lunch with Mike Martz? Go figure.
