NCAA Notes

Oregon got pummeled at home. USC lost to Cal in what had to be the game of the weekend. And Arizona lost at home to a mid-major, rounding out a wholly unimpressive week for the Pac-10. That's right, the "P" in Pac stands for pretender.

And so, to my satisfaction, in the first month of this college football campaign we've had two conferences, the Big 12 and the Pac 10 exposed for what they are: pretty good (just pretty good), and OVER-rated.

The SEC continues to be the only conference that, as a whole, is playing up to their reputation. And, they continue to be dissed in the polls. Georgia, which has looked impressive in every game, including their nail-biter loss to #6 LSU, remains in the second 10. Tennessee, solidly undefeated against quality opponents, remains behind the Buckeyes of Overtime State U. Every conference has a few teams that don't measure up. But only in the SEC are the top teams playing like top teams in an elite conference should play.

No, you can't count the Big East. They don't have a rep to begin with, and it's still Miami and Va Tech. Pittsburgh? Another media attempt to manufacture an interesting story.

Poll-ster Head up the Butt Theorem 1: Some teams can stink it up on the field against CINO (competition in name only) and still won't be held accountable provided they just don't lose. To support my theorem I give you #3 Ohio State. Right now fans are looking up at them in awe ... how did they get up there? and ... when will gravity finally set in. Then there is #14 Kansas State. By virtue of their "big" home wins over Troy State, McNeese State and U Mass, the Wildcats have not been too severely damaged by their lone loss to Marshall. I don't ever want to hear a pollster/commentator complain about teams playing weak schedules. As long as they continue to be rewarded for doing just that, why would they stop.

Coming up this week: Texas-KState! The beautiful thing is, one of them will lose.

In a few cases this week I'll be giving away a lot of points. It just seems that there are a some teams getting no respect. They're going to have to pile it on if they'll have any hope of getting noticed. I don't like it, but what can a team do when they're sitting behind highly ranked and highly rank, Ohio State?
